Unprecedented growth for Hume: Western Sydney City Deal signing
Hume will experience unprecedented opportunities for growth as a result of today’s signing of the landmark Western Sydney City Deal.
The City Deal is an agreement between the Federal Government, NSW Government and eight western and south western Sydney councils to invest in Western Sydney’s future prosperity.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor, who was in Werrington with the Prime Minister, NSW Premier and local mayors, said resources across three levels of government would see the planning and development of a massive employment centre in and around the new Western Sydney Airport.
“Today’s City Deal signing locks in the brightest future for southwestern Sydney and the electorate of Hume,” Mr Taylor said.
“Spinoffs from the City Deal will lift the regional economy, starting with today’s commitment to a north-south rail line between St Mary’s and Badgerys Creek via the new Airport.
“I have been a strong campaigner for this outcome, because of the benefits for entire populations to the north and south of the new Airport being directly connected to a booming Western Sydney Airport economy.”
The Federal and NSW governments have a joint objective to see rail connected to Western Sydney Airport in time for the opening of the Airport. A business case will be developed to finalise a route and station locations.
Mr Taylor welcomed further formal City Deal commitments to Western Sydney, including:
- $150 million for local councils to deliver community facilities and amenities to enable new housing supply
- new STEM (Science, Engineering, Technology and Maths) education facilities to support hi-tech jobs in Western Sydney
- a 5G strategy for Western Sydney, with plans to implement a trial to be led by a telecommunications carrier and,
- a new agribusiness precinct.
“I encourage business and community leaders to swing in behind these investments and opportunities and I look forward to working closely with stakeholders to maximise the benefits for Hume.”
