Turnbull Government delivering infrastructure to bring jobs and growth to northern Hume

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says the Turnbull Government is delivering the infrastructure to bring significant jobs and growth to northern Hume.

Mr Taylor welcomed Prime Minister Turnbull’s recent commitment to look at accelerating fast rail between Sydney’s CBD and western Sydney which would deliver further economic wins for areas around Badgerys Creek airport - including Camden, Wollondilly and Wingecarribee.

“There’s no doubt fast rail links will maximise the economic benefits of the second airport and it is only the Turnbull government that can deliver these big projects. We will be approaching Federal infrastructure investment in terms of maximising returns for taxpayers. Smart finance deals with the private sector will be the only way to make these important investments happen - and Labor doesn’t understand this,” Mr Taylor said.

He said during construction alone, the second airport would create 11,000 jobs for western and southwestern Sydney, spilling into northern Hume. Once completed, there will be an estimated 9,000 direct jobs on site by 2031, a further 7,000 indirect jobs in surrounding areas and by 2063, a forecast 61,500 direct on-site job opportunities.

“Many local residents around Camden, Narellan, Picton, Bargo and the Southern Highlands, are travelling out of the area for work. The airport and associated businesses will provide ongoing employment closer to home for this fast growing population.”

Mr Taylor said already more than 300 jobs had been created as part of the first road projects in the $3.6 billion 10-year Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan.

“When I was at the Camden Show last weekend there was great interest in how the Government is improving the commute for local residents. Already underway is the 5.7km upgrade of Bringelly Road. The Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan also includes $1.6 billion to upgrade 31 km of The Northern Road to four lanes from Narellan to the M4 Motorway and $1.25 billion to build a new 14 km motorway from the M7 Motorway and The Northern Road.

“Of enormous importance to greater Camden is the $114million Narellan Road upgrade, jointly funded by Federal and State governments, which will widen the road to six lanes, remove two serious bottlenecks and install traffic lights to improve peak hour traffic flow.”
