Statement on next steps after the Spill Motion
I’m pleased that the spill motion is over, and we can get on with doing the hard work of delivering better government for Australia.
I said from the outset I thought spills didn’t solve the problems Governments had to solve: Spills don’t substitute for better government.
I have tried to get this message across in a number of media interviews in recent days. https://soundcloud.com/angus-taylor-mp
We need to put this behind us and get on with the job of formulating and implementing good policy.
There will be changes, particularly in the way the government listens to and responds to the “grass roots” in our electorates.
That doesn’t mean focusing on reactive, populist policy. But it does mean better engaging all Australians, and the backbenchers who represent them, in policy formulation and implementation.
I have paid tribute to Tony Abbott’s leadership on ABC Radio’s The Country Hour http://www.abc.net.au/…/tony-abbott-a-good-pm-for-r…/6079494
The message from this week is that community input is becoming more important, not less important. We can’t always agree on every issue, but we can show all voters the respect of listening and solving problems as best we can, so long as there is respect for the fact that we have to govern for all Australians, not just a few.
I greatly appreciate the thousands of emails, phone calls, Facebook posts, letters and personal conversations I receive from so many of my constituents every month.
