High School students invited to join My First Speech competition
High school students across Hume are invited to put their views to the House of Representatives as part of this year’s My First Speech Competition.
Open to all secondary students in Years 10 to 12, this is the third time the popular competition is being held, having also run in 2011 and 2013.
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the competition was a great way for MPs to connect with students.
“When I gave my first speech in Parliament, it was a great occasion. There’s a real energy and sense of purpose in the Chamber.
“This event is a terrific way to have your ideas heard - right on the floor of parliament and in front of key decision makers. I urge all interested students to take part,” Mr Taylor said.
Students are being asked to imagine themselves as a newly elected MP and to write and present a three-minute speech on an issue they are passionate about.
House of Representatives Education Committee Chair Ewen Jones and Deputy Chair Alannah McTiernan will be judging the entries along with Seven News political editor Mark Riley.
Entries are due by Friday 12 September 2014. For more information please contact the Australian Parliament’s Community Relations Office on freecall 1800 139 299 or email comps.reps@aph.gov.au
