A robotics league for Goulburn has received a major boost thanks to a $13,560 grant from the Coalition’s Stronger Communities Programme.

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said the funding would be used by Goulburn High School P & C to promote more learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics subjects (STEM) through robotics.

“This is a fantastic concept by Goulburn High as it will provide participants with the opportunity to gain skills and experience in problem solving, critical thinking and team work,” he said.

“A robotics league will allow the community from across Goulburn and surrounds to be involved in STEM activities and also provide students the potential to compete at world level.”

In fact, four Goulburn High School students will attend the VEX Robotics World Championships in April; the only team from Australia to compete.

“This grant is an investment in both education and innovation, and I look forward to seeing the local league up and running soon,” Mr Taylor said.

Goulburn High’s Head Teacher of Science Katherine Hyland said the Stronger Communities Programme grant would open up an opportunity to reach out to local students with an interest in learning robotics.

“The new laptops and robotics kits that we have been able to purchase using the grant will not only be used at the high school, but will also support the local primary school kids to be more involved with robotics as well,” Ms Hyland said.

Hume’s sporting clubs and community groups have shared in more than $430,000 under the Stronger Communities Programme – including more than $146,000 under Round 3.

Also receiving grants under Round 3 were:

• Goulburn Mulwaree Little Athletics Inc - $3320 for new high jump mats
• Goulburn Mulwaree Council - $20,000 for the installation of a picnic/BBQ area in Victoria Park adjoining the new adventure playground.

“The Stronger Communities Programme is assisting community organisations and sporting groups throughout the electorate, delivering tangible social benefits, and in many cases, supporting the great work of our volunteers,” Mr Taylor said.
