Funds to help Goulburn Mulwaree manage flood risk
Goulburn Mulwaree Council will receive $93,333 in funding to help manage floodplain risk, Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced.
The funding was being provided through the Floodplain Grants Scheme under the jointly funded Commonwealth-State National Partnership Agreement on National Disaster Resilience.
Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s Floodplain Risk Management Study Plan is one of 28 NSW council projects that will receive a total of $5.9 million to better understand and manage their flood risks.
“This funding will enable councils such as Goulburn Mulwaree to make informed decisions on the best way to invest in flood mitigation and better manage the risk posed by floods,” Mr Taylor said.
“Our governments are working together to strengthen capabilities in the community, and this funding will continue to assist many local councils to develop strategies to mitigate their flood risk.”
“It is increasingly clear that communities need to become resilient in the face of natural disasters.”
Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s current flood study review, together with recent flooding events, reaffirmed the local flood risk to life and property.
An updated floodplain risk management study and plan will investigate viable flood risk management measures, taking account of social, ecological and economic factors and informing current and future flood risk.
Mr Taylor said local councils were integral in responding to floods and in the subsequent recovery processes.
“By enabling councils to better understand and manage flood risks we can help minimise some of the devastation caused by flooding,” he said.
