Encouraging attendance at Monday's Remembrance Day services across Hume
9 November 2013
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has encouraged local communities to attend Remembrance Day services this coming Monday, 11 November and pay tribute to the men and women who have served our country in wartime.
“Our local towns and villages have a proud history of military service. I will be attending a Remembrance Day service in Goulburn and I believe it’s important we stand together and commemorate the bravery and sacrifice of those who have served on our behalf,” Mr Taylor said.
“I remember as a child the limp that my grandfather had from the bayonet injury he received in World War One in France. Other relatives of that generation also served in the Great War and our family remembers their courage on Remembrance Day.
“The commemorative poster this year marks the armistice of the Korean War in 1953. 18,000 Australians served in Korea as part of the multinational United Nations force. 340 Australians lost their lives.
“During the Korean War, just like conflicts before and after, men and women from across Australia banded together and supported each other through the worst of times.
“I encourage us all on Monday to honour this spirit of mateship,” Mr Taylor said.
“We can also show our ongoing support for current and ex-service men and women by buying a poppy as part of the RSL’s Poppy Appeal. You will see people selling poppies this weekend and through next week and I urge you to dig deep and support our local RSL branches.”
