Billion dollar roads investment drives jobs, housing growth

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has today welcomed the latest report card on the Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan which highlights a surge in jobs growth on the back of the Australian and NSW governments’ $3.6 billion infrastructure investment in the region.

The report card shows that in the past 12 months, work on major road projects - including the 35-kilometre $1.6 billion upgrade of The Northern Road - is generating more than $30 million worth of contracts for Western Sydney suppliers and contractors.

Mr Taylor – the Assistant Minister for Cities - said the governments’ investment will revitalise roads in one of Australia’s fastest-growing regions ahead of the opening of the Western Sydney Airport in the mid-2020s.

“Airports are magnets for local jobs,” he said.

“This is such a great opportunity for south western Sydney and western Sydney more generally.

“We really intend to, and will, capitalise on that job growth opportunity through the City Deal between state, federal and local governments here in this region.”

Mr Taylor said the upgrading of The Northern Road, Narellan Road and Bringelly Road will also enable major new housing developments in these areas.

“We know that if we want to have more affordable, more accessible housing, we need more homes and that’s what we’re getting around here with these major new infrastructure developments,” he said.

“These are the visible signs of a major new city being built here in the west and southwest, which will serve Sydney for many decades to come.”

The report card dovetails with recent progress in planning for the airport project, including finalisation of the Environmental Impact Statement on September 15.

Work is underway to prepare the airport site and a joint discussion paper on Western Sydney's rail needs has been issued seeking public feedback.

The joint investment is stimulating work for local industry, as highlighted by a 240 per cent increase in the number of local businesses working on these projects compared with last financial year.

Mr Taylor said both governments were committed to making sure quality infrastructure is in place ahead of time to cater for the additional one million people expected to live in Western Sydney by 2031.
