The big pour! New interchange takes shape at Bringelly
Work is in full swing on building a new interchange at the intersection of The Northern Road and Bringelly Road at Bringelly, with a major concrete pour scheduled to begin today to support the structure.
Minister for Cities, Urban Infrastructure and Population Alan Tudge said the work — being delivered as part of the Australian and New South Wales government’s $3.6 billion Western Sydney Infrastructure Plan — would enable motorists and bus and truck drivers to travel through the area more quickly and safely.
“Work is also powering ahead on The Northern Road upgrade between Peter Brock Drive and Mersey Road, as well as on the Bringelly Road Upgrade between King Street and The Northern Road,” Mr Tudge said.
“As part of these projects, work is now underway on building a new interchange 350 metres west of the busy intersection of The Northern Road, Bringelly Road and Greendale Road which will provide an underpass to improve travel times and ease congestion for road users.”
New South Wales Minister for Roads, Maritime and Freight Melinda Pavey said building the interchange was not an easy task, with crews pouring 2,600 cubic metres of concrete over two days to get the new bridge deck just right.
“All concrete is being supplied by local manufacturers — a great win for the community,” Ms Pavey said.
“This is an amazing engineering feat, as it is one of the largest and most continuous concrete pours Roads and Maritime Services has undertaken.”
New South Wales Minister for Western Sydney Stuart Ayres said once the interchange was completed motorists on The Northern Road would travel underneath Bringelly Road.
“Around 15,000 vehicles use The Northern Road each day, but this number is expected to increase as western Sydney grows,” Mr Ayres said.
“When The Northern Road and Bringelly Road upgrades are completed, motorists will enjoy improved connections between Penrith, the M4 Motorway, the Western Sydney Airport site and surrounding developments.”
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said a lot of planning went into this significant milestone.
“More than 40 engineers have planned for around 100 workers to carry out the continuous concrete pour,” Mr Taylor said.
“Once the new bridge deck is complete, Roads and Maritime will install bridge barriers, footpaths and safety rails as well as excavate to build retaining walls underneath the bridge.”
State Member for Camden Chris Patterson said the community was invited to watch the continuous concrete pour from a viewing platform on Saturday 12 January between 8am and 5pm.
“This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the community is invited to come along and watch the huge amount of concrete being poured into the new bridge,” Mr Camden said.
“While this important work is carried out, detours will be in place so motorists are advised to plan ahead and follow the direction of signs and traffic controllers.”
To minimise the impact on motorists, works will take place between 8pm Friday 11 January and 8am Sunday 13 January, weather permitting.
The Northern Road and Bringelly Road interchange is expected to open to traffic in 2020.
