Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said this morning’s opening of Federal Parliament had been a proud and humbling occasion.

Mr Taylor joined MPs and Senators at Parliament House in Canberra for the official opening of the new parliament by the Governor General Quentin Bryce.

Mr Taylor was sworn in as the new Federal Member for Hume, declaring: “I will be faithful and bear true allegiance to Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second, her heirs and successors according to law. So help me God.”

“Today has been a significant day for the people of Hume. As their new representative in Canberra I will be working hard to drive policy change to directly benefit my constituents. I will be working to achieve:

• changes to infrastructure funding so that major works like the Barton Highway can be completed in a staged and achievable manner
• improved mobile phone services and infrastructure for the benefit of all residents
• better health care for Hume - more doctors and more mental health services - and,
• fair and sensible outcomes for regional Australia on agriculture policy, on policy affecting small business and in relation to the Renewable Energy Target (RET).

“These are important goals of mine for the next three years, but they are by no means my only focus. I am here to represent all residents of Hume, on all relevant issues,” he said.

Mr Taylor said he was proud that his father had been in the public gallery today for the ceremony. “My Dad’s life in politics, with the NSW Farmers Association and the National Farmers Federation, has always been a strong motivator for me. Again I would like to thank my family - my Dad, my wife Louise and our children - and our tremendous support base, for allowing me this opportunity to represent my electorate in the Parliament of Australia.”
