Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has welcomed the calling of tenders for the installation of lights at Picton Sportsground.

Visiting the playing fields yesterday (Thursday) with Wollondilly Mayor Benn Banasik, General Manager Les McMahon and Manager Infrastructure Planning Dick Webb, Mr Taylor said the calling of tenders signalled a big step forward.

“Congratulations to Council on the work that’s been done to date. The Federal Government’s $250,000 commitment to Picton Sportsground comes after Council has already contributed more than two million dollars to buying the site and carrying out earthworks, irrigation and turfing, as well as installing power and amenities,” Mr Taylor said.

“Federal funding will pay for installation of light towers, trenching, conduit and cabling, allowing completion of Stage One of the grounds. This is an important contribution to Picton sport, especially kids’ sport, and to local tourism.”

Mayor Benn Banasik said the lights would significantly improve safety and convenience.

“We're over the moon with this great contribution by the Federal Government and our local Member Angus Taylor. The regional facilities at the new sportsground will be heavily used and the lighting will ensure safe late afternoon and night practice,” he said.

Mr Banasik said the tender process would run for three months. He said it was anticipated the construction would take up to three months once a contractor was appointed.
