Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says he is continuing to push hard for a Headspace centre for Goulburn.

“I know the strong concerns of the Goulburn community to see more services for young people with mental illnesses. I have met recently with Headspace CEO Chris Tanti to make him aware of these concerns,” Mr Taylor said.

“A public forum I hosted in Goulburn last July showed clearly that the community is united on the need for a one stop shop where young people can go. I believe strongly in the merits of the Headspace model.”

Mr Taylor said Headspace services included support, information and assistance for young people aged 12 to 25, with a key aim of early intervention.

“One of the main issues I raised with Chris Tanti was that Goulburn had been continually overlooked for funding because of its proximity to Canberra and Wollongong. Opening a Headspace in Goulburn would take us a long way forward in reassuring young people there is ready, professional help at hand - not one to two hours away and only if you can catch a lift.

“Part of the local solution also lies in better education in our schools and workplaces about mental illness - what signs to look for and what to do - and better funding and support for practical ideas such as mental health training for local sporting coaches and local teachers. 

“I know Anglicare and the community are extremely worried about youth suicide rates, bullying and depression. I have met recently with Anglicare Community Services Director Simon Bennett, who is also the chair of the Goulburn and District Suicide Prevention Network, and have told him that I am taking strong steps forward on this issue and am hopeful of some positive news soon for Goulburn.”
