Member for Hume warns against local rate hike in Goulburn
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor is adamant that the current economic climate is not the right time for local governments to increase rates.
Expressing strong opposition to the special rate variation proposed by Goulburn Mulwaree Council, Mr Taylor said, "this is the wrong time, and, to put it simply, people just can't afford it."
"Under Labor, Australians are already facing a tough Christmas."
"I'm completely against the special rate variation proposed by Council, and my concerns are based on direct feedback from Goulburn residents visiting and calling my office."
"We know that hardworking Australians are digging deep into their savings, working extra hours or taking on extra jobs, and we know they're making sacrifices in their household budgets, especially leading into Christmas.
Mr Taylor said right now, local councils need to focus on maintaining a strong local economy during these challenging times.
"My concern is that this proposed special rate variation might have the opposite effect."
"Right now, the priority should be on supporting residents and local businesses. Now is not the time to burden them with additional costs," Mr Taylor said.
Mr Taylor will be making a submission to IPART when community consultation opens in February.
