$1.27 mill to replace old bridges at Currawang, Binda and Crookwell

Thursday, 18 April 2019

Angus video >>   “Better and safer bridges are an important investment in this region. The Crookwell River Bridge is an old slab concrete bridge from the 1930s and the Thornford Road Bridge at Currawang dates back 70 years and still has a 10-tonne load limit on it.

“While there’s a lot of history tied up in these bridges, they’ve passed their used-by date in terms of safety and efficiency.

“We’re replacing these old structures with safer, more reliable concrete bridges and approaches. It’s a priority of the Coalition Government to support regional transport through the Bridges Renewal Program which provides up to 50 % of the cost of repairs and replacement for these bridges.”

Goulburn Mayor Bob Kirk joined Angus Taylor at the Currawang bridge on Thursday to welcome the Federal contribution.

“Thornford Road is the last remaining timber bridge in the district and is in urgent need of replacement. The new bridge will mean improved safety and a better stock route, and I’d like to thank the Federal Government and our local member Angus Taylor for this grant funding.”

Upper Lachlan Shire Mayor John Stafford said the upgrades to the Crookwell River and Diamond Creek Bridges at Binda would help local farmers and freight operators.

“Replacement of these bridges will remove the pinch points for heavy vehicles, improving access to Main Road 54 and the M31 Highway, saving operators time and money,” Cr Stafford said.

“The bridge replacements will also provide nearby residents with improved access to the village of Binda, as well as Crookwell and Goulburn.

“On behalf of Council and the community I would like to thank the Federal Government and Angus Taylor for this investment in our Shire, which will benefit road users for generations to come.”
