A safer and smoother journey is a step closer for motorists travelling between Sydney and the Illawarra with important safety works on Appin Road getting underway.

 

Federal Minister for Urban Infrastructure and Cities Paul Fletcher said safety works had now commenced on Appin Road between Mount Gilead and Appin as part of the Turnbull Government’s $50 million commitment to improve safety and unlock affordable housing in the area.

 

“Appin Road is a key link for more than 10,000 motorists travelling each day between the Illawarra and south-west Sydney,” Mr Fletcher said.

 

“These works are essential to ensure the safety of road users using this stretch of Appin Road.

 

“These safety upgrades will include tactile line marking and the installation of signage and more guideposts.

 

“Work is also progressing on the design for an overtaking lane, curve realignment and road safety barriers in the area.”

 

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said work would be complemented by the upcoming widening of Appin Road between Mount Gilead and Rosemeadow.

 

“These works will help ensure Appin Road can support the Greater Macarthur Growth Area, which is set to see thousands of new homes built between Campbelltown and the Illawarra in the coming decade,” Mr Taylor said.

 

“Proposals to minimise the impact on flora and fauna, including koala fencing, are also being investigated.”

 

Consultation with stakeholders in the area has begun, with letters provided to residents, while information sessions will also begin in the coming months.
