$1.25 million federal boost for Rocky Hill upgrade
Major upgrades to the museum and facilities on Goulburn’s iconic Rocky Hill will receive a $1.25 million Federal boost, Member for Hume Angus Taylor has announced.
The grant – made available through the Coalition Government’s Building Better Regions Fund – will contribute to half the project’s estimated $2.5 million cost.
“The Rocky Hill precinct, including the Museum, is one of the most culturally and historically significant areas not only in Goulburn, but the entire electorate,” Mr Taylor said.
“This upgrade will have enormous benefits, including improving accessibility for residents, visitors and vehicles, making more space available for exhibitions and public talks - and creating jobs and opportunities for locals.
“These improvements will assist the work of volunteers - and the new education area I’m sure will be popular with schools and group visitors from throughout NSW and the ACT.
“Community interest in war memorials is increasing. Over the past few years we have seen more and more young people actively participate in our Anzac Day services and other commemorations.
“This upgrade will place the Rocky Hill precinct well for the future and I commend Goulburn Mulwaree Council for putting together a fantastic grant application for what was a very competitive funding program.”
Mayor Bob Kirk said: “This welcome funding announcement is another strong show of support for Goulburn from the Federal Government and our local Member for Hume Angus Taylor.”
“The concept plans unveiled recently present an exciting design that blends modern elements and finishes while fitting in with the unique landscape of Rocky Hill – this upgrade will be a welcome addition that will allow the museum to attract higher visitation numbers, in turn having a positive economic benefit for the region,” Cr Kirk said.
The Building Better Regions Fund received more than 500 applications, and Goulburn Mulwaree Council’s application was one of about 100 which were approved.
“This is another massive boost for Goulburn from the Federal Coalition Government and comes on the back of the $10 million investment for the Waste Water Treatment Plant, the $1 million commitment for the Goulburn Performing Arts Centre, and millions more for local bridges and other infrastructure,” Mr Taylor said.
The Building Better Regions Fund was designed to help build strong communities for decades to come.
"The aim of this program is to help build the kinds of regional communities our children and grandchildren either want to stay in or come back to, and projects like this one do exactly that,” Mr Taylor said.
Another round of Building Better Regions Fund is expected to open before the end of the year.
The successful applicants for funding under the Building Better Regions Fund’s Community Investments Stream – for projects designed to support a range of local capability-building activities – will be announced in the coming months.
