The Goulburn Sporting Hall of Fame’s move to the Grace Millsom Function Centre will get a substantial boost thanks to funding under the Stronger Communities Programme (SCP).

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor said a grant of $13,582 has been awarded to Goulburn Mulwaree Council under Round 2 of the SCP. Council is facilitating the Hall of Fame’s relocation from the Goulburn RSL to the Recreation Area.

“To announce this during the Olympics is perfect timing as the Hall of Fame honours a number of Goulburn Olympians including the likes of Glenn Turner and Dunc Gray,” Mr Taylor said.

“It’s important we continue to pay tribute to our local sporting greats and this grant money will help do just that by funding the construction and upgrade of display cabinets.” Mr Taylor said the aim of the Stronger Communities Programme was to improve community participation through the funding of a small capital project

“Goulburn Mulwaree Council put forward a detailed application and a compelling case that will deliver a strong social benefit,” he said.

“The Hall of Fame’s new home at the Grace Millsom Function Centre will allow for the broader community to become involved in the Sporting Hall Of Fame presentation through viewing the memorabilia on display.

“The annual Induction of local sporting heroes event will also be able to have a larger attendance so that more people can enjoy the occasion.”

Work on the relocation is expected to start in the next few weeks. Goulburn Tennis Club has also been allocated funding of up to $5,000 under Round 2 of the SCP to help replace old fencing.

Federal funding grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 for small capital projects were available under the SCP which delivered $45 million over two funding rounds from 2015-16.

The programme was open to local councils and eligible, incorporated not for profit organisations who could match the funding, in cash or kind, on at least a dollar-for-dollar basis.
