Turnbull Government's $50 million commitment to Appin Road
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says the Turnbull Government’s $50million commitment to upgrade Appin Road will produce a safer road for local commuters and an integrated plan for more affordable homes in the area.
“I welcome today’s commitment from the Government, both as a local MP, with many of my constituents travelling daily on the Appin Road, and as the Assistant Minister for Cities.”
The Appin Road Safety Review showed there were 76 casualty crashes over the five years prior to 2012, including five fatalities. Two of those fatalities were in Hume.
“This is an investment for safety first and foremost,” Mr Taylor said.
“It is also smart cities policy in action. Our policy is all about building roads ahead of building housing. We need to increase the supply of housing, but we should only do this when we’ve built the roads to support that growth.
“More accessible, affordable housing requires more supply, but we can’t do that until we’re investing in the roads.
“As Assistant Cities Minister, and as a local MP, I will be working with all stakeholders to carefully guide housing growth and to preserve amenity.”
Mr Taylor said there was nothing clear or coordinated about Labor’s announcement on Appin Road.
“The Turnbull Government has a comprehensive Smart Cities Plan. Labor is throwing money at anything that moves and we all know who pays at the end.”
A re-elected Turnbull Government will invest $50 million in targeted works on Appin Road between Rosemeadow and Appin.
