Preliminary works toward traffic lights for Picton Rd/ Hume Highway intersection
Traffic lights at the busy Picton Road/Hume Highway intersection will improve safety for thousands of motorists every day.
Member for Hume Angus Taylor joined Member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell on Friday to announce preliminary works toward installation of the lights will be starting in a few weeks.
The Federal and NSW governments have both contributed $1.25 million towards the new traffic lights at the eastern and western Hume Highway ramp intersections with Picton Road.
Mr Taylor said more than 18,000 vehicles – about 15 per cent of them trucks - travelled through the intersection every day.
“There were 45 crashes in the five years to December last year at this intersection, including one fatality and 18 crashes involving injuries.
“Queue detection technology will also be installed at the Hume Highway off ramps to limit traffic queuing back onto the Hume Highway,” he said.
Traffic modelling and concept designs are now complete and a Review of Environmental Factors is being prepared.
Mr Rowell said preliminary work would start before Christmas with major work expected to take place after the summer school holidays.
“There will be some impact to motorists between late January and the completion of work, which is scheduled for April 2016, weather permitting.
“I would like to thank motorists in advance for their patience as this important safety upgrade is carried out.”
