Official re-opening of Picton-Thirlmere-Bargo RSL Hall

Friday, 24 July 2015

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has congratulated veterans’ volunteers on the upgrading and extension of the Picton-Thirlmere-Bargo RSL Hall.

Mr Taylor officially re-opened the hall on Wednesday (22 July), on behalf of Minister for Veterans’ Affairs, Senator the Hon Michael Ronaldson, describing the community effort as “monumental”.

“For a small, not-for-profit RSL Sub Branch, this has been a huge undertaking, along with the work of local building contractors. I am delighted to see the improvements,” Mr Taylor said.

He said the Federal Government had provided a $60,750 Veteran and Community Grant toward rebuilding the roof of the 50 year old facility. He said improvements had also included the building of an external awning and patio, a memorial garden, fencing, installation of a new kitchen and the repairing of broken windows.

“I know the hall is well used by a number of veteran’s groups including the RSL Sub branch, Legacy Widows Club, RSL Ladies Auxiliary, veterans’ indoor bowlers and an RSL craft group. It’s also a popular venue for the community – for Noonameena Girl Guides, Tahmoor Lions Club, Tahmoor-Thirlmere Ex Services Club, White Dove Church, Thirlmere Football Club and Thirlmere Primary School.

“Congratulations to everyone involved, with a special mention to Sub Branch president Tim Bennett-Smith on his commitment to this community and to the memory of those who have served our country.”

Mr Bennett-Smith said the effects of the hall extension would be long lasting.

“The building is now a more user friendly community venue, providing disabled access and facilities to Sub Branch members and the general public. The new hall has created an injection of enthusiasm within the Sub Branch members who are talking about opening the hall for displays and as a drop in centre for veterans.”

Mr Taylor was joined at the opening by Sub Branch President Tim Bennett-Smith, Member for Wollondilly Jai Rowell, Veolia Trust representative John Reynolds and Founding Headmaster of Wollondilly Anglican College Dr Stuart Quarmby.
