Federal funding for living memorial at Bungonia
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has congratulated the Bungonia community on the completion and dedication of a living monument to Gallipoli.
With the help of a Federal grant of $2,493 through the Anzac Centenary Local Grants Programme, the Bungonia Gallipoli Grove picnic area recognises the service of seven men and women who went to Gallipoli from the Bungonia district.
Mr Taylor attended a dedication of the picnic area last Wednesday with community members.
“This is a fitting community tribute. A great deal of thought and time has gone into this memorial and I congratulate everyone involved,” Mr Taylor said.
Set in parkland near the existing war memorial in Bungonia Village Park, the Gallipoli Grove includes a new picnic area designed to be a shared community and family space.
Anne Wiggan from the Bungonia Park Trust described the plantings as having special significance: 13 olive trees symbolise endurance and hardship, five pin oaks represent the northern theatres of war and three crabapple trees provide a renewal of flowers each Spring.
