Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has flagged innovation as the pathway to more jobs and higher incomes.

Responding to the 2015 Intergenerational Report released today, Mr Taylor said new industries and skills would replace older industries and skills, and innovation would inevitably deliver higher living standards.

“Steamships replaced sailing ships. The internet is reshaping the world. Innovation will reduce pressure on our natural resources. It can improve government services while at the same time containing spending. The Intergenerational Report shows us we need to be smarter about responding to the big issues - an ageing population, falling workforce participation and growing health, welfare and education expenditure.

“Around the world, innovations in healthcare are accelerating. Not only are we seeing new devices, drugs and procedures, we are also seeing broad ranging innovation in the purchase and provision of health services.

“In education – primary, secondary and tertiary - technology has the potential to revolutionise the sector. Text books are being replaced by technology solutions. Internet and video conferencing allow direct and easy access to the world’s best thinkers,” he said.

“Successful entrepreneurs in Hume include Brumby at Cowra, who are leading the world in small aircraft design, CSR at Goulburn making cutting edge products for low rise building developments, Sarajane Furniture at Cowra who have expanded into roof tile batons alongside traditional timber products, Hilltop Meats at Young who are an innovative export abattoir.

“It is time for policy makers, commentators, and all engaged in the political process to enable innovation in the delivery of government services.

“More than ever, Australia needs the opportunity for open, bipartisan debate on how we embrace innovation to make us more productive.”
