Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has congratulated the Crookwell community on a successful application for funding under the 20 Million Trees Programme.

A funding grant of $94,040 will go to Landcare and community groups to plant 23,000 trees in the Crookwell area over three years.

Mr Taylor said the project was to help native flora and fauna.

“The trees will benefit bird and mammal species, including the Squirrel Glider, which has only recently been returning to the area because of new acacia trees.

“New plantings will also improve the condition of local Box and Snow Gum woodlands. The trees will be planted on 25 hectares of private and five hectares of public land in the Crookwell area.”

He said across the country 57 projects had been approved in the first funding round, which would see the planting of up to 1.6 million trees.  

“I am looking forward to seeing these trees grow into green corridors that will enhance the local environment and benefit the district of Crookwell,” Mr Taylor said.

In addition to grants to smaller groups and individuals, the Government will undertake a tender process for service providers to carry out large-scale tree plantings. Details are available at www.nrm.gov.au/20-million-trees.
