Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has congratulated the young people involved in a Green Army project in the Upper Lachlan on work underway to help the environment.

At an official launch event on Monday, Mr Taylor said during the next six months the community would see first-hand the work being done to regenerate native flora.

“The Upper Lachlan team is working in the Crookwell area to manage vegetation to allow for native plant regeneration.

“During the first month they’ve been working with three Landcare groups (at Breadalbane, Heffernan’s Creek and Roslyn) carrying out tree planting. They will be working on erosion control, seed collecting, weeding in local National Park areas and they will be later joining Landcare groups in the Peelwood and Fullerton areas helping with fencing and further revegetation work.

“I understand team members will also be carrying out bird surveys locally and water quality monitoring. With all of these new skills, the young people will not only be helping conservation efforts, they will be gaining practical training for the workforce or further study,” Mr Taylor said.

The Green Army programme is encouraging grassroots action to support local environmental projects across Australia, providing training to 15,000 young people by 2018.
