Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor says the decision by Boral to stop cement production at its Maldon plant near Picton is very sad news for workers.

“I am offering my strongest support to the staff who are hearing this news for the first time. I understand up to 28 positions will be lost - another hit to the local community.

“I am well aware of the reasons behind this decision by Boral. I am also acutely aware that real families are losing their income stream and real lives are being adversely impacted.

“Clinker production is one of the most energy intensive industries in the world and unfortunately recent policies and developments in Australia have made the industry in Australia relatively uncompetitive.

“Our local companies are folding under the pressure of cheap imported products, in this case clinker.

“It makes me even more determined to try and create other jobs in my electorate. While it’s cold comfort for Boral employees whose positions will be lost, I’m delighted to see continuing growth in quarrying around Marulan and the massive opportunities for jobs that will come through the infrastructure program at Badgerys Creek. This Government is working hard to create jobs.

“It is positive news that Boral is continuing its grinding, packaging and logistics activities at Maldon. Management says that 54 jobs will be retained locally and it will continue to be a significant employer in Wollondilly.

"I have been assured that appropriate support and assistance will be given to the staff who are directly affected by the end of clinker production at Maldon.  

“I urge Boral to try its utmost to find other internal opportunities for the displaced staff.”
