Riverina prostate cancer nurse position advertised
Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor has welcomed the advertising for a new Prostate Cancer Care Coordinator for the Riverina area. Mr Taylor said it was great to see Murrumbidgee Local Health District and the Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia moving quickly to fill the role.
“Federal funding has allowed this position to be created and the role is being advertised until 27 October on the NSW Health website and on seek.com,” Mr Taylor said.
He said the position was for a clinical nurse specialist to be Wagga based, but to also coordinate outreach services to parts of Hume.
“I am pleased this role is all encompassing and will provide comprehensive nursing assessments, consultation and educational support for patients and their families.
“The coordinator will be working closely with GPs across the region to build an efficient referral network for patients, as well as assisting in identifying opportunities for patients to take part in clinical trials and promoting prostate cancer awareness in the region.”
Cootamundra prostate cancer campaigner Eddie Williams, who met recently with Mr Taylor to welcome the funding, said he would be pushing for the funding to be continued beyond its current two year term.
“Now we have the money, we need to hang onto it. I have been assured by Angus he will also be working toward this,” Mr Williams said.
Mr Taylor said it was usual that government funding was committed for a finite period of time.
He said he had advocated strongly, with his parliamentary colleague Michael McCormack, the Member for Riverina, for prostate cancer support for the area and he would continue to ensure funding was spent appropriately to provide important outreach for local communities.
