Calling for more volunteers for Tharawal Green Army

Friday, 18 September 2015

More volunteers are being sought for a Green Army project underway at Couridjah near Buxton.

Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council chief executive Megan Ely said the project was likely to run until December and any young people aged 17 to 24 who were interested in helping out should give her a call.

During a recent visit, Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor praised the restoration work underway at the Couridjah site.

“Under the guidance of the Aboriginal Land Council, the Green Army team is preparing the area for native vegetation. In coming months they will start creating paths through the bushland and will build new seating and a bush tucker garden, all for public access.”

He said the Federal Government’s Green Army Programme linked young people who were looking for work with community conservation projects.

Participants are paid an allowance and are given practical training to learn new skills.

“Importantly, they are also given valuable mentoring to help in fostering a new interest in taking their careers forward.”

He said local organisers had been impressed by the enthusiastic work attitude from the team, with some members now actively looking for careers in land management and conservation.

The Tharawal project brings the Green Army initiatives in Hume to a total of eight – two at Crookwell, two at Yass, two in Wollondilly, one at Palerang and one at Goulburn. To contact Megan Ely at the Tharawal Local Aboriginal Land Council please call 4681 0059 or email ceo@tharawal.com.au
