Businesses should consider a work experience trainee

Federal Member for Hume Angus Taylor is encouraging local businesses to consider taking on a trainee for four weeks under the new National Work Experience Programme.

“The programme will help job seekers, particularly young job seekers, to get valuable experience and showcase their skills to potential local employers,” Mr Taylor said.

He said the initiative was designed to build confidence and experience.

“Employer surveys show that insufficient work experience prevents many job seekers from getting and keeping a job,” Mr Taylor said.

“I have spent time with young trainees across the electorate and I know they are incredibly grateful for any chance to move their way onto and up the employment ladder.”

He said the programme would be mutually beneficial to local businesses and those seeking work, as it aimed to facilitate a transition into paid roles.

“Job seekers will be able to undertake work experience at participating businesses for up to 25 hours a week for a maximum of four weeks. Employers that choose to offer employment after the completion of the placement may be eligible to receive a wage subsidy of up to $6,500 over 12 months. This is a great incentive and I strongly encourage local businesses to get involved.”

Mr Taylor said job seekers would continue to receive their income support payment while in an unpaid placement, together with a supplement, to assist with the costs of participation.
